Definition: biliary cast syndrome

Biliary cast syndrome refers to a severe form of intrahepatic bile duct ischemic injury in liver transplant recipients, and the resultant cellular debris can resolve spontaneously or may require endoscopic clearance.  This syndrome can be seen with a hepatic artery thrombosis, after living-donor transplant, or most commonly after a DCD (donation after cardiac death) donor transplant.
