Definition: acute liver failure

Acute liver failure is the presence of any degree of encephalopathy (+/- coagulopathy) occurring within 24 weeks of the onset of symptoms (usually jaundice), in patients without any underlying liver disease.  If the encephalopathy occurs within 8 weeks of symptoms, it is termed fulminant liver failure and there is a lower mortality than those with a more gradually evolving course.
