Clinical Pearl

Hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia should be avoided in patients with acute liver failure (ALF).  Glucose should be monitored every 2-6 hours.  If the glucose level is below 100 mg/dL, begin D10 infusion and maintain a serum glucose level above 100 mg/dL and less than 180 mg/dL.
