Definition: Type 1 hepatorenal syndrome

Type 1 hepatorenal syndrome (HRS-1) occurs late in the course of cirrhotic portal hypertension, usually after ascites and hyponatremia are present.  It involves a rapid rise in serum creatinine that is unresponsive to a volume challenge and occurs in the absence of known renal disease.
