Definition: red wale sign

The red wale sign refers to the linear, red streak sometimes noted atop an esophageal varix; it is evidence of a recent or impending bleed (as it represents a location where the varix wall is thinnest).  The term comes from the wale of corduroy fabric (each vertical line being an individual “wale”).
