Definition: culture negative neutracitic ascites

Culture negative neutracitic ascites (CNNA) is a diagnosis made when ascitic analysis reveals a neutrophil count > 250 but there is no bacterial growth in the culture medium.  Since this scenario represents most “positive” paracenteses, it is a more common diagnosis than spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP- when culture is able to speciate a particular bacterial antigen).
