Definition: platypnea

Platypnea, the opposite of orthopnea, is the sensation of dyspnea that is relieved when lying down and is usually associated with hepatopulmonary syndrome. This is a condition with excessive pulmonary arterial vasodilation at the lung bases, so when sitting upright (preferential blood flow to the bases) poor gas exchange ensues when blood is shunted through the dilated vasculature.
