Definition: lipofuscin

Lipofuscin is a granular, brownish “wear and tear” pigment found in the cytoplasm of macrophages and hepatocytes.  It represents the indigestible, lipid-containing residue of degradation, and is suggestive of the “cleaning up” of a recent injury.
