Definition: splanchnic circulation

The splanchnic circulation consists of those vascular beds perfused by the celiac (stomach), superior (pancreas, small intestine) and inferior mesenteric (colon) arteries, and receive 25% of cardiac output.  As portal hypertension develops, these vessels dilate and lead to even higher portal pressures by sending more blood toward the cirrhotic liver.
