Definition: neurohormonal hyperactivation syndrome

Neurohormonal Hyperactivation Syndrome (NHHS) occurs in the setting of the so-called hyperdynamic circulatory state of decompensated cirrhosis.  It is defined by the presence of portal hypertension-derived, end-organ disease, including pulmonary (ie. hepatopulmonary syndrome), renal (ie. hepatorenal syndrome), cardiac and adrenal.
