Definition: HELLP syndrome

HELLP syndrome (Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes, Low Platelets) develops in the second or third trimester and complicates preeclampsia in 2-12% of cases.  This is a multi-systemic disease characterized by a microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, and should be addressed by induction of labor.
