Definition: hematochezia

Hematochezia refers to blood expelled by the rectum; it is red or maroon in color, signifying its origin is distal to the duodenal ligament of Treitz.  This is in contrast to melena, which originates proximal to the ligament of Treitz and is digested by gastric acid, turning it black.
