Definition: portopulmonary hypertension

Portopulmonary hypertension (different than hepatopulmonary syndrome!) results from vasoconstriction and remodeling of the muscular pulmonary artery walls, in a patient with portal hypertension.  A right heart catheterization should show mean PA pressure > 25 mm Hg, and a capillary wedge pressure < 15 mm Hg (reflecting the absence of general volume overload).
