Definition: hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (or, hemophagocytic syndrome) may present itself in the immunosuppressed liver patient with a concurrent viral infection like EBV or CMV.  Cytokine dysregulation activates innumerable Tcells/macrophages that deplete cell lines and cause fever, splenomegaly, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperferritinemia and hypofibrinogenemia.
