Definition: acute liver failure

Acute liver failure is one of the most misdiagnosed entities in the hepatologist’s vernacular, and “entirely” unrelated to the magnitude of rise in transaminases.  It is the onset of hepatic encephalopathy within 24 weeks of hyperbilirubinemia in a patient with a previously healthy liver.
