Definition: portal vein thrombosis

Portal vein thrombosis is a cause for concern when presenting symptomatically or when there is felt to be a risk for retrograde propagation into the superior mesenteric vein (SMV), a case where transplant candidacy is commonly disregarded.  The decision to anticoagulate must not necessarily come on the day of diagnosis.
