Definition: hepatopulmonary syndrome

Hepatopulmonary syndrome typically exists in a setting of portal hypertension, and is part of the so-called hyperdynamic circulatory state. In the lung, an excess of vasodilatory nitric oxide (NO) hurts the RBC’s chances of contacting the capillary wall, and a defect of gas exchange ensues.
